The buzz: After four years in the making, not to mention a brief hiatus thanks to the recent protests, Renaissance Hotel has re-introduced one of its many watering holes, R Bar. Don’t be quick to judge, though, this is more than your usual hotel bar, this place has a life of its own, thanks to its modish reflective décor and hip, young crowd.
The décor: The venue goes OTT on reflective surfaces and color-changing fiber optics. Sounds horribly tacky right? Luckily, they manage to pull it off, creating a warm but sophisticated wood and granite space filled with sets of plush sofas and sleek black tables. There’s also a DJ booth, one long bar and an open kitchen.
The music: Apart from the default jazzy background tunes, pretty much anything goes as guests are invited to make requests or even bring in their own music.
The crowd: You would expect in-house guests, but we’re surprised to see groups of young, hip university students as well as office workers from the neighborhood having a drink while waiting for the rush hour to subside.
The price: Cocktails B290, beer B220, wine B220/glass, B980/bottle. A selection of light dishes is also on offer, starting from B140. We recommend the freshly-cooked panini B180 and tapas (two for B210).
Why you’ll come back: You’re looking for a chic, quiet spot to hang out with a group of friends and don’t mind shelling out extra for hotel-priced drinks.
