MUSIC À LA MODE: MUSIC FESTIVAL FASHION TRENDS OF 2013

Each festival comes equipped with its own unique location, performances, atmosphere, core demographic, and – consequently – its own fashion. So what are concert-goers rocking at music festivals this year (pardon the pun)? From head to toe, we have got you covered.

BONNAROO
Manchester, TN, USA | June 13th – 16th, 2013

Viewed as perhaps one of the most traditional music festivals in the western world, the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee pays homage to the world’s most famous outdoor rock ‘n’ roll concert: Woodstock. Held every year on a farm in south-central Tennessee, this year’s festival trends reflect the natural, simple, Southern style of the Bonnaroo atmosphere. Loose fitting cotton shirts and dresses in vintage prints along with classic jean, twill, or leather bottoms make up some of this year’s most festival-worthy looks. Complete the outfit with a thin yet oversized scarf to hide from the sun and you’re Bonnaroo ready!

This year’s line-up included Paul McCartney, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Wilco, Grizzly Bear, The Animal Collective, Billy Idol, ZZ Top, and The Sheepdogs to name a few and, though the 2014 dates and performers have not yet been determined, you can bet that Bonnaroo will return just as strong as ever.

SXSW
Austin, TX, USA | March 8th – 17th, 2013

Another music festival in the American south that has gotten critical acclaim for its music, film, and style is South By Southwest (SXSW). A staple of American music culture for the last 26 years, 2013 marked the festival’s highest attendance yet at just over 30, 000 people. Playing host to acts such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Atlas Genius, Half Moon Run, Surfer Blood, and Tegan & Sarah as well as comedy shows, film showings, and a special performance by Cirque du Soleil, SXSW is one of the most diverse music festivals on our list and this medley of entertainers draws a myriad of folk from all walks of life.

The wide-ranging talent and demographics at SXSW continue to translate into the fashion of the festival and a few featured pieces of SXSW 2013’s wardrobe were high-tops or leather ankle boots, loud, bohemian-inspired prints, and – in true Texas fashion – anything denim.

SXSW traditionally takes place in the month of March every year and is already scheduled for March 7th to the 16th of 2014 though no line-up has yet been released.

OSHEAGA
Montreal, QC, Canada | August 2nd – 4th, 2013

The only Canadian music festival on our list, Osheaga has been keeping the beat alive since 2006 in Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau. Known to many as “Canada’s fashion capital”, Montreal is the ideal city in which to host such a large, well-known display of music and fashion. The style in Montreal generally stems from European fashion trends and – as can be easily witnessed at Osheaga – indie music had its influence here as well.

Osheaga 2013 has yet to occur but given the current trends in the independent music scene and past festival fashion choices, we can expect to see plenty of crop tops, high-waisted shorts, band t-shirts, and obscure patterns on tops, bottoms, and dresses alike.

This year’s line-up includes acts such as Ellie Goulding, The Cure, Angel Haze, Yelawolf, Stars, Tricky, Beck, Charles Bradley, and Mumford & Sons among others. For those interested in making an appearance, tickets are still available.

COACHELLA
Indio, CA, USA | April 12th – 14th & 19th – 21st, 2013

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has graced the state of California every April since 2001. The inaugural event in 1999 set the stage for the music and fashion that can only be described as “west coast chic” and, every year since, the music festival has lived up to its full potential. This year, fashion choices centre on fringes, crochet, sunhats, and bold, mismatched patterns.

Coachella 2013 featured Blur, The Lumineers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Grizzly Bear, James Blake, Paul Oakenfold, Sigur Ros, Yeasayer, How To Destroy Angels and many others. Though the line-up for Coachella 2014 has not yet been released, it has been scheduled for the consecutive weekends of April 11th to 13th and the 18th to the 20th.

LOLLAPALOOZA
Chicago, IL, USA | August 2nd – 4th, 2013

Last on our list (but by no means least) is a festival established in 1991 that this year showcased the musical stylings of Queens of the Stone Age, The National, Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, Lana Del Rey, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, and Eric Church to name a few. Just as distinct as the selection of performers, the Lolla fashion does well to demonstrate the diversity of its attendees. From rock ‘n’ roll to bohemian and back to flirty and fun, the Lollapalooza fashion is a blend of nearly all the aforementioned festivals.

Perhaps most unique is Lollapalooza’s eco-friendly approach. The Chicago festival has made it a point to come completely equipped with bike-racks to reduce greenhouse emissions for those travelling within the city, a farmer’s market for healthy eating and the promotion of locally grown goods, as well as several stands selling handmade arts and crafts throughout the grounds.

While taking into consideration the individual fashion trends of each music festival, it is also imperative to know what to look for when it comes to accessorizing.
