Companion net tows
showed that abundances of large copepods were highest in
the southern portion of the study region and that
49–63% or more of the copepods were presumably
overwintering C. acutus Copepodite Stage CV at depths
greater than 150 m, corresponding to the high abundances
of copepods observed in the VPR at depth. By contrast,
over 60% of the copepods from Marguerite Bay, off
the shelf, and in the northern portion of the study region
(and over 30% in the southern region) were M. gerlachei
that were distributed more evenly through the water
column
