Phytoplankton or micro algae, the microscopic plant life in the
sea, are a vital constituent of the marine food web and accounts for
40% of the total fixed global primary productivity (Falkowski,
1984). Under favourable conditions they rapidly divide, grow and
accumulate at the surface of the ocean as a scum, forming a
‘bloom’. This phenomenon is known to occur in waters throughout
the world. Trichodesmium, a non-heterocystous genus of blue green
algae, is a planktonic, marine diazotrophic, cyanobacteria characterized
by trichomes that form colonies which occurs in
oligotrophic waters throughout tropical and subtropical oceans
(Capone et al., 1997; Carpenter et al., 2004). It has been widely
