The walls of the first floor of the Living Center are constructed from rammed
earth. This earth was previously foundation soil, dug from right below the
construction site. With a thickness of 250mm, these walls can both keep the
building cool in warm weather and insulate it from the cold.
The second floor can be accessed via a narrow staircase made from used
wooden planks. Upon ascending these, you will find yourself at a wide
common area in the center of the second floor. Much of the second floor is
constructed with used wooden planks, similar to the staircase.
However, the walls are made from compressed earth brick rather than
rammed earth. This is so that the second floor will not be overly heavy, and
thus require a larger supporting structure.
