Efforts to reduce the net consumption of water in
pulping and bleaching plants by increasing the closure
of bleaching loops tend to result in accumulation
of inorganic compounds (Ulmgren 1997),
extractives (Back 2000) and depolymerisation products
from lignin and carbohydrates in the circulating
filtrates. These substances may precipitate onto the pulp and thereby affect the quality of the
final product.
