Abstract. Chulalongkorn University has a long historical background. Pink color is known as the
identity color. To be more specific on which pink colors of general prints are acceptable for the
identity color of Chulalongkorn University, printed samples with the identity color were collected
and measured to find the differences among the printed colors. Then the Natural Color System
(NCS) colors were determined corresponding to the printed samples. The obtained NCS colors were
used as samples in the experiment. A standard color was obtained from the color of pink cushion
placed under Prakeaw, an emblem of Chulalongkorn University. Measurements were taken at the
same specific light source as in printed samples. Comparison was then made to determine the color
tolerance. A method of pass/fail tolerance was adopted to evaluate the optimum color difference
between the identity color and the color of general prints by comparing the results of color
measuring device against that of visual assessment. A group of 101 observers were involved to find
their perception acceptability of printed pink samples against identity color or standard pink color.
The color different equations, DE94 and CIEDE2000 were employed.
Introduction
Color is another concerned factor that is usually used as a ‘trademark’. Companies select
their colors to represent a persona of organization and usually decides to stick with its chosen
choice forever. Color also describes philosophy and ambition, e.g. red gives a feel of energy,
strength, speed and power to observers while green means environmental and safeness.
Chulalongkorn University has a long historical background. Prakeaw, the emblem of the
university, is derived from the head ornament of high ranking members of the Royal family and was
used as the personal emblem of King Chulalongkorn [1]. It was used as the emblem of the civil
service college which subsequently became Chulalongkorn University, CU Pink color, the personal
color of King Chulalongkorn, is used as the identity color of CU and subsequently the color of
cushion to support Prakeaw is pink. Prakeaw with the pink cushion is enshrined at the Memorial
hall of CU. The CU products are frequently found coloring pink but different hues. To define the
pink color tolerance of CU general prints, collecting of printed samples, measuring their colors and
pink cushion supported Prakeaw, selecting NCS colors as the representatives of printed samples and
visual assessment for color tolerance were carried out. The determination of color tolerance have
been carried out for various applications [2,3]
Materials and Methods
Standard pink
The standard pink color was obtained by measuring the spectral reflectance of Prakeaw’s
cushion which was pink dyed fabric. The measurements were carried out using X-Rite
Spectrophotometer SP62 with specular component excluded and were taken on 2 different regions
