How: Moving a patient up in bed is a noninvasive procedure that can be safely accomplished for a typical adult patient by 2 caregivers using a draw sheet (also called a lift sheet). With each caregiver positioned on opposite sides of the bed, each grasps the draw sheet and, with patient assistance if possible, simultaneously moves the draw sheet and the patient closer to the head of the bed ((Figure 1)). Alternatively, a single caregiver can move a patient up in bed using a full body sling with an over-bed lifting device or a mechanical lift (e.g., a Hoyer Lift; for details, see Nursing Practice & Skill ...
