Insomnia management includes pharmacological (Table 1) and non-pharmacological therapies (Table 2). Insomnia drugs are seldom prescribed during pregnancy due to concerns for adverse effects. Non-pharmacological therapies for insomnia include treatment of underlying causes, improvement in sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.9 Mindful yoga group interventions improved sleep in pregnancy measured by 72 hour actigraphy and self-report.10 Exclusion of primary sleep disorders that affect sleep initiation and maintenance may be warranted.
