It is found that deformation and fracture properties of rocks are influenced by air, water and other fluids in contact with their internal (pores and cracks) surface (HAWKES & MELLOR, 1970). However, it is strongly recommended that contamination should be avoided from the outset by using only clean water or air machine operations.
If cutting oils or dirty water must be used, then the rock sample should be thoroughly saturated with clean water before machining starts. The main objection to cutting and coring with plain water is the danger of machinery rusting, but it was shown by HAWKES & MELLOR (1970) that no great problems in this respect arose when machines were cleaned and oiled regularly. For moisture-sensitive rocks, or water soluble substances, water cannot be used and compressed air is used instead.
