Discussion leadership in an adult class in usually assumed to be the prerogative of the teacher, but often it can be helpful to have a student as leader, provided that he has a knowledge of the required techniques. The teacher can then remain aloof, to be called upon when needed, or, more happily, can become an ordinary member of the group must be such that its members will accept his change of role without emotional stress. Many adult educational groups, of course, meet without a teacher present, as in the discussion group scheme organized in New South Wales since 1938 by the University of Sydney Department of Adult Education. There a box of books and other aids is sent to the group, which holds a regular fortnightly discussion and maintains correspondence contact with a distant teacher. Although this scheme was designed to meet a particular set of circumstances, the feature of student leadership in place of teacher dominance is a variation which might improve the learning process in many places.
