Vision and Prehension
In chapter 5, we considered evidence showing that prehension and manual aiming are different actions. An important difference between them is the object manipulation goal of the prehension action. Although target characteristics influence the control of both manual aiming and prehension contact with the target does not terminate a prehension action. What the person intends to do with the object after it is contacted is an essential component of prehension. But, because of the similarities between the two actions, vision is involved in the control of prehension in some ways that are similar to its role in the control of manual aiming.
