This is due to the fact that the Buddha teaches his followers to have religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence with followers of other faiths. The story in the Sihasutta is a good case in point. When Siha, a chieffollower of the Niganthas (Jainism), declares himself a Buddhist, the Buddha accepts his adherence and allows him to give alms to the Niganthas who come to his house. These are the Buddha’s words, ‘Your family, Siha, has been as a well-spring to the Niganthas for a long time. Therefore, you might consider giving alms to the Niganthas who approach you.
