Fifty-eight middle-aged patients (49 males and 9
females) with mild to moderate hypertension were
recruited, and
56 completed the study. Patient characteristics are given in Table
I. At the beginning of the
study we included men only. However, to reach the
required number of patients we later included hyperten-
sive women as well. The hypertensives were either
newly detected
(n = 30) or previously treated (n = 28). In
the latter case, antihypertensive medication was with-
drawn at least
4 weeks before the start of the study. All
patients had creatinin and liver enzyme values within
the normal range.
