During the latter 20th century, China’s government attempted to supplant the traditional religions with Marxist ideology, in which people all over the world were supposed to union based on class struggle (not familial piety).
However, in recent decades, since the death of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1976, capitalist innovation has brought wealth and a relaxation of Marxist policy to China.
This socioeconomic change has enabled a comeback for many traditional religious practices.
