This paper discusses how to realize applying methods of knowledge-based engineering to parametric models of hull structural members and integrated management of parametric model information in the process of ship design. The ship professional function of hull structural design is improved with the help of knowledge-based engineering. In addition, it is to establish a database that meets the designer’s requirements of management, reuse and querying for large amounts of design knowledge. The aims of this paper are to develop a knowledge-based engineering system by acquisition of design knowledge, and to improve design productivity by integration of the knowledge system and a general purpose CAD system for shipbuilding applications.
