Jealousy and Love: Jealousy and love are intertwined in “The Phantom of the Opera”. When Erik’s love did not go unchallenged, he felt nothing but pure affection for Christine. He unselfishly taught her to sing, and he was a comfort to her after her father’s death. However, when Christine and Raoul met again after several years, Erik could see that Christine was still in love with her childhood friend.
Erik decided that the only way to win Christine was to force her to love him. However, he then realized that her love for Raoul would never fade. This threw him into a rage, and he was ready to kill himself and everyone in the opera house if he could not have Christine for himself.
Another character who embodies jealousy and love is Raoul. He is jealous of Erik’s hold over Christine. He cannot stand that she holds him in such high esteem. He feels insecure compared to the ever-present Erik.
