The objectiveofthisexperimentalworkwastostudytheeffectofcrumbrubberondecreasingthe
expansioncausedbyAlkali–Silica Reaction(ASR)inmortarspecimenspreparedwithhighlyreactive
aggregate.
In thisregards,mortarbarscontaining0%,16%and24%crumbrubberbyvolumeas fine aggregate
replacement werepreparedfortheacceleratedmortarbartest(AMBT).
Resultsfromthisstudyindicatedthattheuseof16%and24%crumbedrubberas fine aggregate
replacement decreasedtheASRexpansioninmortarbarsby43%and39%,respectively.However,the
compressivestrengthofthemortarcubescontaining16%and24%crumbrubberreducedby20%and47%
at 28days,respectively.WhileThermo-GravimetricAnalysis(TGA)showednoreactionbetweenrubber
particles andporesolutionofconcrete,theScanningElectronMicroscopyanalysisfrommortarbar
sections containingcrumbrubberconfirmed thepositiveimpactofphysicaldampingofcrumbrubber
particles onreducingtheASRinthemortarspecimens.
