In the present study, seven bioreactor systems were employed to
treat simulated shampoo-processing wastes, and compared andcontrasted relative to energy consumption and treatment performance.
Reactors included aerobic only, three anaerobic only (hybrid
up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket, HUASB; anaerobic hybrid reactor,
AHR (Ahammad et al., 2010); and anaerobic completely-stirred
treatment reactors, AnCSTR); and three anaerobic–aerobic sequence
systems. COD removal rates, methane production levels, energy
used, and process inhibition and microbial community
characteristics were compared among reactor designs. Optimal systems
are recommended for treatment of PCP industry wastes.
