The purpose of this study was to review accepted theories of children's musical development, to apply these theories to the creation of a general music curriculum for grades PreK-4 utilizing the music standards of the National Standards for Arts Education, and to implement the curriculum at the DemonstrationSchool at the University of Massachusetts Lowell during the 1995-1996 school year. Pre- and post-study surveys were distributed to the students and teachers of the school. Results showed that the students gained musical skills and knowledge during the study period as well as demonstrated enjoyment of music activities. The study presents forty developmentally appropriate music lesson plans that represent a wide variety of cultures. An index to lessons, list of materials and resources, copies of the surveys distributed, PreK-4 music National Standards for Arts Education, and PreK-6 Opportunity-To-Learn Standards for Music Instruction are included.
