Two parallel incubation experiments were conducted, one under submerged conditions to simulate rice paddies and the other under aerobic conditions to simulate upland cropping conditions.
Soils
Roi Et series Aeric Paleaquult, a sandy soil characteristic of paddy fields in the Northeast, was used for the submerged experiment, while Khorat soil series Oxic Paleustult, an upland soil covering 20% of the land area of the Northeast, was used in the aerobic experiment. Topsoils were collected at 0–20 cm depth, air dried and sieved to pass through a 2-mmmesh screen. Soil properties are shown in Table 1.
