Pushed into a corner by television , the movie industry switched to sexual and violent content that could not be broadcast on TV. Between 1993 and 1997 , the releases included : ‘Bebas Bercinta’ (Freedom to love) , ‘Ranjang Cinta’ (Bed of love), ‘Gairah Terlarang’ (Forbidden Passion), ‘Gejolak Nafsu’ (Slamming Desire), ‘Permainan Erotik’ (Erotic Game), and ‘Sentuhan Erotik’(Erotic Touch). Such films were played in the villages but were rejected by the big cinema in the luxury malls. They were ultimately defeated by imported films that could deal with similar themes but with higher production values. The new generation of film production is characterized by films addressing the teenage market. Digital technologies have helped to bring the cost of production down. The successful genres are teenage love , horror, and mystical themes.
