It is also important for the operating people to have a general feel from touching and
seeing the pulp after displacement presses by taking a sample. They should be able to
offer an opinion on consistency (can a drop of filtrate be squeezed from the pulp?),
and the washing efficiency (color of the filtrate left with the pulp). Once roughly
calibrated with lab samples, this can often provide quick information to the control
room about the process.
