Lesson COG 56
Task: Recognize everyday words.
Prerequisites: ADT 4, ADT 5
Concept: Unlike the tasks that involve spelling or word formation, this task involves an association between a written word and the object or person it represents. The task being performed is referred to as sight-reading as opposed to actual phonic (sound) interpretation. The recognition is related to the complete sound production of a word and not the actual letters of the word; therefore, words that may not be reasonable to be spelled but can be of benefit if known are a possible focus for this activity.
Behavioral Objective: Upon being shown a sample of a word and being requested to point to the object or person represented by that word, the student will point to that item to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Objects or people common to the student's environment, markers, and paper.
Task Analysis:
1. Select approximately 10 items or people's names that are common to the student's everyday experiences. Write down in a flash card-type manner the printed word for each item.
2. Select one of the flash cards created in Step 1, show it to the student, and then physically guide (if needed) the student through the process of pointing to that object.
3. Continue Step 2, reducing guidance until only the verbal prompt of "show me where this is" or "point to this" or "show me where [name of person] is" is needed for the student to look at the card and point to the object or person.
4. Use the concept of Steps 2 and 3 for each one of the remaining words selected.
5. Begin presenting all of the words in a random manner. Continue until the objective is met.
