5.7 Ad-hoc approach to observation
Both the system based approach and the ethnographic approach would seem to be unwieldy from the point of view of the practicing teacher There seems to be a case for an approach to observation which is flexible and eclectic, in that it will use both quantitative and qualitative data where each seem appropriate. It seems rather pretentious, and even somewhat misleading to term this approach ethnographic since it will not necessarily (or even usually) have that sense of entering a culture for an extended period of time which Atkinson and Hammersley have characterised as the job of the ethnographer see above. It seems better to go for a more modest title, which is why it is simply being called here
