Geppetto builds a marionette to be a substitute son, that he names Pinocchio. A fairy brings the toy to life and tells Pinocchio he must earn the right to be a real boy by proving that he's brave, truthful, and unselfish. Despite the help of Jiminy, a cricket assigned to be Pinocchio's conscience, he joins a puppet show instead of going to school, he lies instead of telling the truth each time he does this his nose lengthens, and he travels to Pleasure Island instead of going straight home. When Pinocchio learns a whale swallowed Geppetto, he risks all to save his father and so displays he deserves to be a real boy.
