3.1. Areas affected by marine debris in July 2011
Marine debris from the Nakdong River affected the northern,
eastern, and southern coasts of Geoje Island in July 2011 (Fig. 2).
It is likely that marine debris did not reach the western coast because
it was blocked by peninsulas and islands. The field report
of the Geoje municipal government officials (unpublished field trip
report in July 11, 2011 by Lee and Kang) reported that 25,000 m3
of marine debris was found on the northeastern coast of Geoje Island.
From the interviews with fishing village leaders of the western
and southern coasts of Geoje Island, it was confirmed that
the debris affected the southern, but not the western coast.
