Self-help group participation is an effective means to address behavioral health issues including mental health and addiction problems. Self-help groups exist for nearly every issue and problem. Mental health professionals play a key role in connecting clients to self-help groups and ensuring their effective use. This article explores how professionals can help clients engage the core elements of the self-help experience: experiential knowledge, the opportunity to help others, and the expansion of community ties. Self-help and professional services are viewed as complementary and the article explores how simultaneous participation in self-help groups can enrich both the counseling and self-help experience.
