Topless women at Times Square
They’ve become synonymous with Times Square – famous faces soliciting tips from tourists by posing for photos. However, things have been “hotting” up at one of the most famous landmarks in the Big Apple with the arrival of topless women plying the photo op trade.
Tempers have flared over the aggressive tactics used by the performers in the past and now New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says enough is enough.
“I said very clearly I don't like it. I don't think it helps the environment there and that we're going do something about. You now know there's a task force that has been created. This will move very quickly. I expect a report back with a lot of very tangible actions no later than October 1st, hopefully sooner.”
But many visitors think the buskers should be allowed to stay.
“I think it's OK as you can see. If you don’t want to be bothered by somebody you just keep walking. When you live in New York you get used to people asking you and talking to you on the streets. You just keep walking and ignore them!”
“I think it’s kind of cute for the children. And I think it's all part of the New York experience.”
“I think it's cool to make a photograph with Iron Man at Times Square.”
However, when it comes to the issue of nudity, some say it's a problem that needs to be covered up.
“I’m a no-go for the topless women just because, you know, you should at least have a bikini top on or some covering.”
And it wouldn't be fair not to voice the opinion of this man – the famed Naked Cowboy, a Times Square regular since 1998.
“Well, I’m the topless cowboy – well, I was, keeping it real for you, I’ll do whatever the Times Square alliance, De Blasio, and Cuomo tell me what to do!”
Difficult words: solicit (to try to get something), Big Apple (a name for New York), ply (to try), photo op (photo opportunity; when famous people pose for photographers), tempers flare (people get angry), tangible (actual), busker (a person who plays music or does something fun in the street to make some money), no-go (not liking something).
