1. On 10 April 1912 the largest ship ever built at the time left England to sail to New York. If was called Titanic, and the people who built it built it believed it would never sink. Four and a half days later, the Titanic was lying at the bottom of the sea and more than 1,500 passengers were dead. In the middle of the night, the ship hit an iceberg and just two hours and forty minutes later it disappeared into the ice-cold water of the North Atlantic Ocean.
