With specific regard to protection of the submarine telecommunication cables, other measures have been undertaken in the APEC region. According to responses to the 2009 survey, six economies have established or indicated an intention to establish the intentional or negligent damaging of submarine cables as an offence. In addition, five economies have established or have indicated an intention to establish submarine cable protection or no-anchoring or nofishing zones, which prohibit or restrict activities likely to damage submarine cables. Five economies reported that mapping obligations were in place and submarine cable systems and/or the protection zones were displayed on nautical charts to ensure cable locations could be readily known. Following an APEC Workshop on Enhancing Supply Chain Connectivity which
was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 15-16 October 2013, Australia is preparing a good practice guide in the area of protecting and regulating cables and in promoting closer engagement of governments and business in monitoring the cable network.
