non-motile, rods (Rhodehamel and Harmon, 1998).
This organism is one of the most common causes of foodborne
illness in the United States. C. perfringens causes an estimated
250,000 cases of food poisoning annually, leading to about 41
hospitalizations and seven deaths each year in the U.S. (Mead et
al., 1999). As a result, the economic impact associated with this
organism was calculated to reach US$12.5 billion annually
