A history lesson on Singapore
Take a walk down memory lane and relive Singapore’s history. There are many historical adventures you can explore and embark on, with journeys that take you through Singapore’s darkest period up to present day. Along the way, you’ll also learn about and personally experience the various cultures in cosmopolitan Singapore.
Honouring people in local history
The landmarks and memorials in present day Singapore serve to tell the island’s decorated history. Most are related to the World War II period, while others reveal the island’s colonial past and Chinese immigrant influence. Two monuments you must visit are the Kranji War Memorial and Civilian War Memorial. Both were erected to honour the men and women who gave their lives for Singapore during World War II. Take your time to visit the other landmarks and memorials too, and discover the stories of old.
Uncover the old stories
Have a surreal experience as you watch history come alive at the museums. With interactive exhibits, vivid replications of historical moments, heritage artifacts and photo evidence among others, you’ll find out all there is to know about Singapore’s past. Start at the National Museum of Singapore, and explore more about Singapore’s multiple ethnic cultures by visiting the Peranakan Museum, the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Malay Heritage Centre – just a few of the many museums you’ll find in Singapore.
Discover Singapore through heritage trails
There’s no better way to explore Singapore than on a trail route. Take your pick from eight walking trails and a river cruise, designed to introduce you to Singapore’s history, architecture and culture. Savour the cultural and architectural richness of the Peranakan, Kampong Glam and Museum trails, enjoy the outdoors on the Bukit Timah Trail, step back in time with the Fort Canning and Civic District trails, and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Little India and Chinatown trails.
Once you’re tired from all that walking, go on a Singapore River Cruise and learn all about the history of the Singapore River. Be intrigued by the mix of new and old architecture along Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay, and learn about Singapore’s grand bridges.
