Parents and healthcare professionals need to recognize the positive contributions that grandparents can make for families in crisis. Involving grandparents in family care plans can improve care and support of siblings of critically and chronically ill children. Further in-depth research is needed to explore grandparents’ involvement in caring for children and their siblings not only when a child is ill, but also when families have children with disability or developmental compromises to develop an appropriate theory. The developmental and social needs of siblings of ill or disabled children and siblings’ perspectives on living with these children also warrant further research.
