In the present study, adequate knowledge of stroke symptoms or risk factors was considered to be more than just being able to mention any kind of stroke symp- tom or risk factor. In previous studies, the correct recogni- tion of 3 of 5,23 or 4 of 6 warning signs of stroke13 was considered as sufficient knowledge of stroke symptoms. We defined adequate knowledge of stroke symptoms as being able to identify both ‘‘numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg’’ and ‘‘confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech’’ as symptoms of stroke, as hem- iparesis, paresthesia, and speech abnormalities are the most common symptoms in acute ischemic stroke,6 and ‘‘facial weakness,’’ ‘‘arm weakness,’’ and ‘‘speech distur- bance’’ are the key elements of the Newcastle Face Arm Speech Test (FAST).24
