Exercise: The Writing Process
Objective: Demonstrate your knowledge of the four steps in the writing process / Use 3rd person references only
1.Creating/Prewriting: (PAGE 1 - may be handwritten)
a. Show that you used one of the three methods of generating ideas (brainstorm, clustering, free writing)
b. Your genre will be “narrative” or “story-telling”
c. Identify the audience
d. Do any necessary research (interview family; call someone on the phone, FB Messenger with them, etc.)
2.Planning / Outlining: (PAGE 2)
Produce at least a half-page outline
3. Writing / drafting (PAGE 3)
Type your story using a word processor. Length should be 300-500 words (one or two pages, double spaced)
Print your draft #1
4. Revising / proofreading: (PAGES 3 & 4)
In a different color of pen or pencil, show your edits using “Proofreader’s Marks Commonly Used…”
Make the corrections, by typing your final draft (PAGE 4)
Print and follow the instructions below
At the end of class turn in:
1) Prewriting example (show one of three methods for generating ideas, identify genre, identify audience, identify any research you did)
2) Outline (half-page)
3) First draft with editing marks (250-400 words)
4) Final draft with corrections already made
