We have developed an in vitro method for rapid selection of T0
barley plants that allows phenotypic screening to commence ca.
5 weeks after pollination, as opposed to ca. 13 weeks following traditional
protocols. The procedure is reproducible and can generate
a large number of transformants. It also provides a convenient
screening step in the transfer of transgenes to recalcitrant barley
cultivars via crossing. The TCC system can be employed to speed
up molecular breeding of barley for production of new varieties
in many applications such as in industrials of bioenergy and also
in functional food.
