This specimen represents the dynamic metamorphism of a granitic protolith under ductile conditions. Plagioclase and alkali feldspar have largely experienced brittle deformation, however, deformation of polysynthetic twins indicates some ductile deformation. Mafic minerals in the protolith have experienced significant grain-size reduction due to deformation and form elongate ribbons of fine-grained material. Quartz grains have experienced significant internal deformation resulting in undulose extinction and the formation and migration of grain boundaries. Grain-size reduction has produced quartz-rich fine-grained ribbons with elongate strained grains, whilst dynamic recrystallisation has also produced areas of unstrained quartz with mortar textures. The large abundance of porphyroclasts in this specimen identifies it as a protomylonite, the presence of fine-grained ribbons distinguishes it from a cataclasite.
