To properly address the concept of motivation toward improving one's hearing, we must ask ourselves if we are helpers who know what is best for the patient and therefore expect compliance, or if we are helpers who support our parents as they work toward an acceptance of the challenges involved in audiologic treatment (English, 2002a). If we expect compliance, we will experience continual frustration, because we have forgotten that, like all life problems, adult parents need to accept or "own" their hearing problems before they will help themselves remediate those problems. The essence of any rehabilitative support is to determine what the parent wants to accomplish, and then to help the patient meet those goals with as much encouragement and creativity as we can muster.
