Communication also affects patient satisfaction and compliance. Poor communication between patients and health care providers occurs for several reasons, including when patients are not provided the opportunity or time to tell their story or explain their history; when they are interrupted, which compromises diagnostic accuracy; and when they feel they are not being listened to. If patients feel that care instructions are too difficult to follow or they do not understand what they are supposed to do, this can affect compliance with care instructions. In addition, poor communication may cause patients to feel that the care instructions go against their personal beliefs and that health care providers are either ignoring those concerns or are unaware of them.13
