Tay Buan Guan shop, one of which used to be the main landmarks of old Katong, sold almost everything that anyone might need in Katong, and it was not just a place where people buy things and go back right away, but an interaction site for Katong residents. However, it had to close down in 2000 due to lack of business after a modern shopping center was built in the area. Mr Lim, an ordinary Katong resident for 43 years, had things to say about the eroding sense of community in Katong due to urban renewal. He expressed regret that it had to close down, also noting that residents now interact together significantly less compared to the time then. Another famous icon is Red House Bakery Shop, a prominent building painted bright red as its name suggests. Famous for curry puffs and other pastries, Red House Bakery was a site for friendly interaction between residents as well. People knew one another much better, and were familiar with the shop owners, chatting with them and sharing stores. However, the government saw it unsafe, forcing its closedown in 2003.
