In the 1930s, John Grierson, a Scottish filmmaker, was the first person to put organization and structure to this genre. Grierson is known for establishing a school, a paradigm, a way in which documentaries are done. Grierson's documentaries were heavily influenced by Flaherty, commercial view, but very sympathetic to the political message behind the Russian filmmakers. Grierson believed in films that incorporated sociological, anthropological, and political views, a perspective on a particular issue and its impact on the society, subjectivity presented in an objective way, very similar to what we would expect out of some documentaries today.
