This research is promising and will need to be followed up with more studies. Regarding naloxone therapy, further research should specifically address how the use of naloxone affects laxative use, and researchers should actively follow pain levels and signs of opioid withdrawal. Ideally, this research should also examine the use of naloxone with different opioid medications and among different causes of chronic pain. Until such research verifies the positive effect of oral naloxone among patients receiving opioid therapy for chronic pain, clinicians should not routinely prescribe naloxone for this indication.
