HEALTH AND FUNCTIONAL STATUS
Participants were asked if their health status in general was excellent, very
good, good, fair, or poor. This variable was examined with ‘‘good health’’
including the first three responses and ‘‘fair=poor’’ health including the last
two responses. Physical function was assessed by asking participants if they
have no difficulty, some difficulty, a lot of difficulty, or are unable to do any
of the seven basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) including bathing, dressing,
eating, toileting, personal grooming, transferring, and walking across
the room; eight Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) including shopping,
laundering, riding a car or taking public transportation, managing
money, cleaning, using the telephone, preparing meals, and taking medication;
and six activities related to lower and upper-extremity functioning
such as stooping, crouching or kneeling, light household cleaning activities,
handling small objects (i.e., buttons) or grasping larger objects (i.e., door
knobs), raising arms above the head, and extending arms forward (24, 25).
Responses were dichotomized as ‘‘no difficulty with activity’’ versus ‘‘any
amount of difficulty.’’
Cognitive status was assessed using the 15-item Adult Lifestyles and
Function Interview-Mini-Mental State Examination (ALFI–MMSE; score range
0–22 points) questionnaire (21). The ALFI-MMSE assesses several domains of
cognitive function, including orientation, attention, immediate and shortterm
recall, language, and the ability to follow simple verbal and written
commands (22). Individuals were considered to be cognitively impaired if
their score was below 17 (21). The presence of depression was measured
using the 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-5, score range 0–5 points),
which consists of a series of yes-no self-referent statements eliciting
108 U. O. Anyanwu et al.information on an individual’s feelings (23). A score of 2 or more is considered
indicative of the presence of depressive symptoms
