Friction evaluation and characterization using drag
applications, once a valid replacement for sample and
scale testing, are of limited value. Drag applications do
not correlate with real world driving conditions, brake
system characteristics, or vehicle dynamics. Industry
research has demonstrated that lining transfer-layer
properties are heavily dependant upon the type of brake
application. Simple drag-based test procedures cannot
account for the varying brake energy resulting from the
weight distribution and dynamic weight transfer of the
vehicle. These variables relate directly to the vehicle’s
wheelbase and center of gravity height.
