The solvent to POME ratio of 0.6 was the optimum solvent ratio
value for the extraction of oil fromPOME. The highest oil and grease content that could be recovered from POME for a single batch
extraction using n-hexane was 3280 mg/L and 1710 mg/L by using
petroleum ether. n-Hexane was a better organic solvent to extract
the oil and grease content fromPOMEcompared to petroleum ether
in this process. The adsorption chromatography had concentrated
the recovered oil from390 to 1450ppmcarotene. Besides, themajor
components of recovered oil fromPOMEwere similar to those of the
crude palm oil, which contained -carotene and -carotene. The
percentage for-carotenewasmuch higher than -carotene which
was 70%:30% in oil extracted from POME. This suggested that oil
could be recovered fromPOMEby using n-hexane in solvent extraction
process and carotenes could be separated and concentrated by
adsorption chromatography.
