that are induced by encounters between microtubules and cell margins. The tendency
for microtubules radiating from the centres of flattened cells to extend around
the margins of such cells has been observed by others (e.g. see Brinkley et al. 1980;
Byers et al. 1980). Conversely, microtubules bend away from their alignment
alongside anterior cell margins into another alignment in osteoblasts that are located
between closely spaced circuli (Fig. 18B). Individual microtubules, or small groups
of microtubules, curve away from the» main anterior bundle at a series of fairly
numerous and regularly spaced loci. Evidently, conditions that promote re-alignment
of certain microtubules at these loci do not modify the orientation of the remainder.
In fibroblasts, on the other sides of scales, some radially oriented microtubules curve
into alignment with each other in localities that are not associated with cell margins
(Fig. 18C).
