Intercropping cassava with maize resulted in a
micro-environment which was less exposed, cooler,
higher in soil water and with improved earthworm
activity and water infiltration. Even without fertilizer
application, intercropping improved the microclimate
and surface earthworm activity. During the
short-term crop growth association, inclusion of
maize in cassava plots caused reduction in nutrient
uptake and tuber yield in cassava; the detrimental
effects were reduced by application of fertilizer.
The results show that in tropical Africa where
intercropping of cassava and maize is a dominant
cropping system, reasonable ecological advantages
and good productivity of cassava can be achieved, as
well as the benefit of the additional yield from the
associated maize.
