serious threattomangroveecosystemsintheregionofthePearlRiverEstuary,potentiallyaffecting
human health.Thepresentstudyattemptedtocharacterizetheecologicalriskofheavymetals(Cd,Cr,
Cu, Mn,Ni,PbandZn)inNanshamangrove,SouthChina,byestimatingtheirconcentrationsinthe
surface sediment.Inaddition,thepollutionhistoryofheavymetalswasexaminedbydeterminingthe
concentrations ofheavymetalsalongthedepthgradient.Thephytoremediationpotentialofheavy
metals bythedominantplantsinNanshamangrove,namely Sonneratiaapetala and Cyperus malaccensis,
wasalsostudied.Resultsfoundthatthesurfacesedimentwasseverelycontaminatedwithheavymetals,
probablyduetothedischargeofindustrialsewageintothePearlRiverEstuary.Spatialvariationofheavy
metals wasgenerallyunobvious.Theecologicalriskofheavymetalswasveryhigh,largelyduetoCd
contamination. Allheavymetals,exceptMn,decreasedwithdepth,indicatingthatheavymetalpollution
has beendeterioratingsince1979.Worsestill,thedominantplantsinNanshamangrovehadlimited
capability toremovetheheavymetalsfromsediment.Therefore,weproposethatimmediateactions,
such asregulationofdischargestandardsofindustrialsewage,shouldbetakenbytheauthorities
concerned tomitigatetheecologicalriskposedbyheavymetals.
