Speaking Thai (for iPad – free version and $5.99 version) – replete with basics and audio, Speaking Thai starts you off in the Thai language. The free version gives you the introduction and three cartoonish lessons, while the full version has twenty lessons. The ‘model conversation’ uses the alliterative marks to indicate tones – tap the picture to hear the words in that panels, then scroll down to see the Thai.
To be clear, it’s about as basic as it can get. Three lessons and an introduction is enough to hook you, but $5.99 seems a bit steep for such a small level of progress. It’s well done, however, and the audio is spoken at a good speed. I wish there were some speed control, but it’s a minor flaw in an otherwise very good app.
